The human mind starts getting conditioned to the people, environment, society, etc. around it.
In simple language, our mind starts getting moulded according to what family, friends, neighbours, teachers, classmates. Or let's say, what people, in general, say about us.
Similarly, the mind also gets moulded depending upon the society we live in, family culture, values, upbringing etc.
The strengths and weaknesses we learn as children are internalized and affect how we act as adults today.
A negative self - image focuses on faults and weaknesses, failure and imperfections.
I believe that all this starts right from a mothers womb. Remember, Abimanyus story from the Mahabharata?
As women, we may have grown up in situations that limit our freedom in terms of socializing, studying, attire restrictions and much more. Also, listening to the continuous banter such as -
Women should be good in household chores.
-Such as cleaning, cooking, knitting, etc.
-Shouldn't study too much or will not find the right match to get married.
-Should marriage as a priority.
-Should learn to nurture & adjust with new norms of a new family after getting married.
Sacrifice careers, ambitions, dreams, hobbies & lifestyle.
When our minds are continuously processing all this data for so many years, it starts getting moulded & conditioned accordingly. All this creates internal & mental havocs, with little or no means of expressing or venting it out.
One cannot imagine the impact this has on Self-image, Self-esteem, emotional well being, personality distress. All these factors also adversely affect outer image and health.
If we want a change from stereotyping and gender bias to gender equality; then first, we women have to self empower ourselves. We need to be mentally strong and stay focused on our Goals.
Take help from professionals to build & strengthen your inner image.
